A special book!
I bought this book for each of the three midwives who attended my 2nd home birth. I haven't seen any other book like it and thought the stories and poems were very touching. If you are amazed by the whole birth process, you will enjoy Birthwork.

The Children of Mauritania : Days in the Desert and by the River Shore (The World's Children)
Published in Library Binding by Carolrhoda Books (October, 1993)
Author: Lauren Goodsmith

The Children of Mauritania:Days in the Desert...
Having just returned from Mauritania as a Peace Corps volunteer, I found this book culturally rich and sensitive in it's subject matter. The photographs are beautiful and depicts what life is like in Mauritania for many people. I also liked that there were two different ethnic groups explained. This is very important to understanding Mauritanian culture. For children, it is approachable and easy to follow. This is a very unique culture and the author does the richness of this culture justice in her book.

Clarice Bean, That's Me
Published in Paperback by The Watts Publishing Group (25 May, 2000)
Author: Lauren Child
Average review score:

Hilarious and too true!
Clarice Bean, That's Me is such a funny book. In it Lauren Child depicts Clarice and her wacky, oversize family. Everyone can recognize the teenager in "the dark tunnel of adolescence" or grandad whose eyesight is on the blink and who therefore is an easy target in card games . . . My kids really loved it and they're now making up their own books about our family (the results could be frightening!). This is a great "alternative" new baby gift-tells it like it really is! Lauren Child's art is wonderful, too, so expressive and quirky.

Creature Teacher (Powerpuff Girls)
Published in Paperback by Golden Books Pub Co Inc (August, 1901)
Authors: Amy Keating Rogers, Lauren Faust, and Tom Biskup
Average review score:

excellent work from the head writer of the "Powerpuff Girls"
It is a new day at Pokey Oaks kindergarten, but Ms. Keane is absent today. Her substitute is a....monster?!? The Powerpuff Girls just know this creature teacher is up to no good. Humorous and just like the show, this book is a winner. It even has a moral.

The Deepest Blue: How Women Face and Overcome Depression
Published in Paperback by New Harbinger Pubns (19 July, 2001)
Authors: Lauren Dockett and Matthew McKay
Average review score:

Full of stories and substance
I have had more than one bout of clinical depression in my life, and I find that the way I feel so isolated from others is one of the hardest things to deal with. When I saw this book I liked the concept, and what I found was that the many different stories from women who deal with depression were a great help. It's not always easy to find other women who are willing to discuss this issue with you, so it was a real relief to read their words on the page.
The author writes well and I appreciated the way she took on the various sides of depression and today's treatments, like the drugs and the therapies, as a journalist would--objectively.
Also, the book is smallish, which means just right in size for someone who's depressed and might not be able to concentrate all that well.
I highly recommend it.

Digital Woes: Why We Should Not Depend on Software
Published in Hardcover by Perseus Publishing (October, 1993)
Author: Lauren Ruth Wiener
Average review score:

Brilliant /entertaing analysis of softwareindustry problems
This book is the one I recommend to anyone who wants to understand why it's so hard to make reliable software, and to any developer who thinks the problems are easy to solve.

The chapters are filled with specific examples of software failures, the judgement mistakes that caused them, and the difficulty of predicting the impact of modifcations to complex software systems. Well written throughout, solid examples, enjoyable probing analysis. Will make you think more about the software you're creating, or using.

Dream Keys for Love: Unlocking the Secrets of Your Own Heart
Published in Paperback by Dell Pub Co (01 December, 1999)
Author: Lauren Lawrence
Average review score:

Dream Keys For Love does unlock the secrets of your heart.
This book is unbelievable. The knowledge it imparts about dreams as soothsayers bent on saving our relationships is fascinating reading. The numerous dream examples really do reveal the nature of the dreamer's love relationship. Symbols of unfaithfulness and lack of trust are clearly presented. The dream scenarios of incompatability and lack of communication show us what to look for in our own dreams. This book made me understand just how much information we repress or deny in our conscious lives, and made me realize how important it is to examine our dreams for clues that will urge us to deal with the problems in our love relationships. I had a dream that clearly revealed a lack of communication in my own relationship that I was unwilling to accept. After reading the book I became more communicative with my boyfriend and my relationship became so much better. In addition, Dream Keys For Love has many celebrity dreams which are such fun to read. Especially Yasmine Bleeth's.
